What to do with Altec 816 cabs???

Hi All, I just picked up a pair of Altec 816 cabs with Pyle drivers. I will replace the drivers, but was wondering if there are any good tweaks or mods that might help these cabs. I will be using them and bass bins.

Also, has anyone ever used them standing on end? That would put the midhorn at ear level.

I believe turning them such that they are taller than they are wide is how they are most appropriately used*. That's how my late version of the cabinet, with factory hardware was flown.

*I'm no expert....... that's my recollection of secondhand knowledge.

Oh....... I'd like to see pictures since your plans seem to parallel my own plans. I've only got one cabinet so it's being stored currently.

This is a pic from my old system. We are moving into a smaller house so I want to replace the JBL scopes with the 816 on end and put the Edgarhorns and Heils on top of it. I am replacing the Pyle drivers that are in the cabs now with Lambda TD15Xs which are all most identical to the Altec 416 which is what, I think, went in these cabs from the factory.

The 816 cabinets are smaller than the JBL Scoops? I wouldn't have guessed that from the pictures.

816's have been loaded with several drivers. My single has a a large format Duplex...... 90's design by Bill of GPA called the Acoustic Engine. It's woofer is 515GHP derived. My late model 816VIX is a bit different, Though. Other 816VIX's did have 515GHP's in them.

My avatar is a cutaway of my 9864-8a........ hard to see, I know, but it's my 816 cabinet.

Come to find out that these are actually cut down 828 cabs. So they are just the top horn section of the A7 system.
